When should your child first see a dentist?

Experts recommend the first preventive check-up when the first baby tooth comes through — and no later than around your child’s first birthday.

At the first visit, a children’s dentist does not just check the teeth — above all, they build trust. That is why the first contact with our clinic takes the form of play. We recommend dental hygiene from around the age of two to three; at first, it too is mainly about getting acquainted and prevention.

Pankrác Clinic

A kids’ corner for playing before the chair

Before your child sits in the chair, they can play. The corner has picture books about teeth, toys for playing doctor and a cuddly monkey with a toothbrush — perfect for showing how teeth are brushed.

  • Books about teeth

Picture books that explain in a playful way why we brush our teeth and what happens at the dentist.

  • A monkey with a toothbrush

Big teeth, big toothbrush: on the cuddly monkey, your child can try brushing before it is their turn.

  • Playing doctor

There is a toy doctor’s kit in the corner too. Once your child has “treated” a cuddly toy, the surgery feels much more familiar.

The kids’ corner is in Pankrác — but we care for children just as carefully in Bulovka and Chodov.

How the first visit goes

Calmly and without rushing. The first visit is there to show your child that there is nothing to fear at the dentist.

  1. 01

    Getting to know the surgery

Your child looks around the surgery, may touch the instruments and takes a “ride” in the chair — and finds out there is nothing to be afraid of.

  2. 02

    A look at the teeth

The dentist gently checks the teeth and gums and explains to your child, in simple words, what they are doing.

  3. 03

    Advice for parents

We show you and your child the right brushing technique, give tips on finishing the brushing and agree on when to come next.

If your child is scared

Our dental hygienists are trained to work with anxious children. The first visit is then purely about getting acquainted — your child simply sits in the chair and looks at the instruments, and the cleaning itself waits for the next visit, once trust has been built.

How to prepare your child

Fear of the unknown is natural. With a little preparation, the trip to the dentist can be much calmer.

Talk about the dentist positively

The word “pain” can make a child worry. Talk instead about checking the teeth and about how the dentist helps teeth stay healthy and strong.

Play dentist

Count the teeth together in the mirror at home. A cuddly toy can be the very first patient.

Bring a favourite thing

A cuddly toy, a small toy or a favourite book gives your child a sense of security.

Baby teeth: why they matter

The belief that “baby teeth will fall out anyway” is a myth. Baby teeth hold the space for the permanent teeth, and losing them early to decay can lead to orthodontic problems later on.

  • Brushing from the first tooth

Start with the very first tooth, for example with a finger brush.

  • Dental hygiene for children

Even young patients should have a hygiene instruction session, where they learn the right brushing technique through play.

  • Fewer sweets

Limit sugary drinks and sweets — they are the main cause of tooth decay in children.

Parents finish the brushing

until age 10–12

Until then, children cannot remove all plaque on their own, especially from the molars. Regular checking and follow-up brushing by a parent are essential.

„My daughter was afraid of the dentist, because the previous “lady dentist”, as she said, doesn’t have time to treat my daughter calmly and properly. Thanks to the new doctor from Bulovka my little girl isn’t afraid and is looking forward to her next visit ❤️“

From around the age of two to three, when the visit is mainly about getting acquainted and prevention. The session takes a standard 40 minutes: staining the plaque so your child can see it, gentle cleaning and a final fluoride application. We involve parents in the right technique for finishing the brushing.

Absolutely. Baby teeth hold the space for the permanent teeth, and losing them early to decay can lead to growth defects and the need for braces. An infection from untreated decay can also permanently damage the bud of the permanent tooth hidden in the gum beneath it.

Yes — children’s fine motor skills only develop fully around the age of 10 to 12. Until then, they cannot remove all plaque on their own, especially from the harder-to-reach surfaces of the molars.
